Originally scheduled for September 10, the match encountered rain delays, leading to only 24.1 overs of play on the first day. In an extraordinary batting display by India, all of their top four batsmen notched up half-centuries. While Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill reached fifty, Kohli and KL Rahul registered centuries.
In this memorable night, Kohli set multiple records. Besides becoming the quickest to reach 13,000 ODI runs, he secured his 47th ODI century, putting him just two behind Sachin Tendulkar’s legendary tally of 49 centuries in this format. Kohli also surpassed Tendulkar’s century record against Pakistan.
On the other hand, KL Rahul marked his return with a splendid century, his sixth in ODIs. It was a special knock as it came as a result of a last-minute inclusion due to Shreyas Iyer’s injury. Rahul capitalized on this opportunity, crafting a stylish innings that included 12 fours and two sixes. Meanwhile, Kohli’s unbeaten 122* featured 9 fours and 2 sixes, including a maximum off the final ball of the innings. India concluded their innings on the reserve day with an imposing total of 356/2.
Why does this story matter?
Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar slammed a staggering 18,426 runs in ODIs alone. This record is deemed unbreakable by many.
Kohli is inching closer to him, having touched the 13,000-run mark, an achievement unlocked by only Tendulkar among Indians.
Kumar Sangakkara (14,234), Ricky Ponting (13,704), and Sanath Jayasuriya (13,430) are the only others with this feat.
However, Kohli is now the fastest to do so.
