What did the Television academy do differently while announcing this year’s Primetime nominees on Tuesday? It didn’t give network or platforms bragging rights. Still, because everyone likes to crunch numbers (as do we), HBO has come out top-of-the-charts with 108 nominations, while Netflix comes second with a total of 105 nominations. Leading the noms—Succession got 25 nominations, including outstanding drama, followed by Ted Lasso with 20 nominations (including best comedy), and The White Lotus got a total of 20 nominations for the most-recognized limited series. Squid Game, on the other hand, has become the first non-English language series to compete for the top spot. Only took a little over a decade for director and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk to convince Netflix that the series be made.
The announcement for this year’s 74th Emmy nominations was made by J.B. Smoove and Melissa Fumero, star of Netflix’s upcoming comedy Blockbuster. Set to air live on Monday, September 12, among the notable snubs were Yellowstone that didn’t earn a single nom, and Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink and Only Murderers in the Building’s Selena Gomez, both of whom were left out of the race.
