Crew follows the escapades of three flight attendants – novice Divya Rana (Kriti Sanon), seasoned Jasmine Kohli (Kareena Kapoor Khan), and veteran Geeta Sethi (Tabu) – employed by the commercial carrier Kohinoor. Frustrated by financial struggles and longing for a taste of wealth, the trio ventures into a complex gold-smuggling operation. However, their aspirations are overshadowed by the airline’s financial turmoil and the enigmatic billionaire chairman, Vijay Walia, reminiscent of the challenges faced by the IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Despite boasting a stellar cast including Tabu and Kareena Kapoor Khan, Crew falls short of expectations, showcasing more potential than substance.
The film suffers from what could be termed as Producer’s Film Syndrome, characterized by overt brand integration and a narrative seemingly crafted around showcasing opulence rather than substance. Moments that could have been poignant are diluted by unnecessary distractions, turning significant scenes into mere platforms for product placement. Moreover, the storyline feels contrived, with elaborate setups leading to lackluster outcomes, leaving viewers yearning for more depth and authenticity.
The comedic elements, while occasionally amusing, often feel forced, with actors struggling to fully inhabit their roles. Kareena Kapoor Khan and Tabu, in particular, seem ill at ease with the exaggerated slapstick humor, detracting from their natural charisma. Despite Kriti Sanon’s earnest performance, the chemistry among the trio feels forced, lacking the genuine camaraderie essential for such narratives.
In essence, Crew grapples with an identity crisis, oscillating between a feminist comedy and a coming-of-age drama without fully committing to either. The burden of excessive expectations coupled with a desire to convey meaning ultimately weighs down the film, resulting in a disappointing viewing experience. Like a faltering cricket team, Crew disappoints its audience, failing to live up to its potential and leaving behind a lingering sense of unfulfilled promise.
