What’s the connection between Ranveer Singh’s birthday suit bravado for an international magazine and Cosmopolitan? The shoot pays homage to Burt Reynold’s now-iconic photoshoot that appeared in a 1972 April issue of Cosmopolitan. The story goes that then editor, Helen Gurly Brown wanted Reynolds to be a part of the magazine’s first-ever male centrefold after his biggest film, Deliverance came out, and had pitched the idea as a “milestone in the sexual revolution.” She later said, “At the time, you know, men liked to look at a women naked. Well, nobody talked about it, but women liked to look at men naked. I did.” As expected, women loved it. However, Burt, on his end, had a complicated relationship with the shoot turning him into a sex symbol instead of a ‘serious actor’.
